I made this for
sfgiantslove51, but if anyone wants to use it, too, go right ahead. :P Although this might be a no-brainer for some people. XD But here I am, making myself useful, I guess. :P
CONVERTING VIDEO FILES TO .AVI IN WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER
(for mini-movie icons)
Here is a fairly simple tutorial on how to change your video files into .AVIs. I've included screenshots to make it easier. Click the thumbnails for full view.
1. Open Windows Movie Maker and make sure the "Movie Tasks" sidebar is open.
2. Click "Import Video" in the sidebar.

3. Wait for it to import...
4. Once you have the video thumbnail, click on it to watch it in the player. Then, when the video gets to the part you want to make into an icon, click on the "split" button next to the little camera on the player's toolbar. This will split your clip in two. After the scene you want ends, click on the split button again to cut it off from the rest of the video.

5. Drag your desired scene into the first frame in the storyboard below and play it to make sure it's what you want.

6. Go to File > Save Movie File. The Save Movie Wizard will pop up.

7. Click to highlight "My Computer" on the selection screen.

8. Type in your desired file name and select the folder you want the .AVI to go in.

9. Click the "Other Settings" radio button, the select "DV-AVI" on the drop-down menu. Click "next" and wait for it to finish saving.

10. If you want to preview the video, select the "Play Movie when Finished" checkbox, otherwise click "Finish".

You're done! Now go check out some mini-movie tutorials (like this one) to put your movie to good use! ;)
